Even though I haven't called Spokane home for the past 18 years, my deep connection to this beautiful city persists. During my frequent visits to Spokane, I've had the privilege of capturing countless portrait sessions in the area, each one etching unforgettable memories into the heart of the Inland Northwest. Today, I'm excited to share with you some of my all-time favorite Spokane locations, many of which have played host to memorable portrait sessions. Whether you're a fellow photographer seeking inspiration or someone looking to book a portrait session with Acorns + Oak, here are some of the best locations in Spokane to consider:
Side note: WA State parks (Includes Mount Spokane, Centennial Trail, & Riverside State Park) require a commercial permit for photography, but don't worry I have you covered. We'll plan ahead and make sure we find the perfect location, and acquire the appropriate permits before the session commences. Most local Spokane parks do not require a permit for simple portrait work.
1. The Flour Mill: The iconic Old Flour Mill, a place that holds a special significance in my journey as a photographer. Fond memories flood back from my first job at "Old Joe Clark's Portrait Parlor" when I was just 15, stationed within the very walls of the mill.
With its timeless charm and rustic allure, this historic brick building offers a picturesque backdrop for capturing unforgettable moments. Its textured surfaces, adorned with myriad ledges and inlays, provide endless possibilities for striking poses and creating captivating compositions.
It's a perfect place to start if you're headed for a Riverfront Park session near the Spokane River. After taking a few photos at the flour mill we can head towards The Howard Street North Channel Bridge showcasing beautiful views of the newly renovated pavilion or take the Spokane Upper Falls Bridge showcasing beautiful views of the Spokane River. If you continue on, you'll end up at Riverfront park, my next location.
Getting there: The Flour Mill, 621 W Mallon Ave, Spokane, WA 99201
Side Notes: You can park in the paid lot at the flour mill or on the street with metered parking. The flour mill is across the street from the Arena so be mindful of events when scheduling a session in the area.
2. Riverfront Park: With its vibrant greenery, historic landmarks, and the serene Spokane River, Riverfront Park is a versatile location that can cater to various portrait styles. From urban backdrops to waterside tranquility, there's something for everyone here. If you want the iconic clock tower in your photos this is the place to go.
The park renovations have led to some beautiful landscapes for portraits as you walk through the park and land by the river, where there are beautiful stairways, rustic bridges, and lush weeping willows. As you walk across the river you can stop at Canada Island Park also known as Snxw Mene Island (sin-HOO-men-huh).
Renovations to landscaping surrounding the Looff Carrousel make for many perfect natural portrait backdrops, with rocks to sit on, and foliage and water in the background.
We can even go inside the large red wagon, where I've done some cool close up portraits with the red of the wagon and the graffiti in the background.
There's also the Rotary Fountain that can act as a beautiful backdrop to portraits. If you've booked a longer senior session I love starting at the flour mill and working our way through Riverfront Park and landing in downtown Spokane.
Getting there: If you don't want to find street parking or start at the Flour Mill an easy parking spot is River Park Square. Washington Street Parking Lot (Riverfront Parking - Lot 1), Parking Lot near Providence Playscape, & a Parking Lot across the street from Washington Water Power (near Huntington Park).
Side notes: Dogs are allowed on leash. Bathrooms are sprinkled through out the park typically near large attractions. Including the carrousel, fountain and SkyRide. Also near shelters like the Northern Bank Shelter and the Forestry Shelter.
3. Huntington Park: Nestled along the picturesque Spokane River, Huntington Park emerges as a newly renovated gem, offering stunning vistas of the Spokane River Dam. For those seeking the enchanting rush of the falls, March to May stands out as the optimal time to experience its breathtaking majesty.
The park itself is a testament to meticulous landscaping, boasting rustic bridge backdrops, scenic foliage, natural rock formations, and beautiful fountains. Benches and picnic tables dot the landscape, providing ample opportunities to pause and pose amidst the park's serene ambiance.
As you explore, a winding walkway leads you to the park's base, inviting you to immerse yourself in its tranquil surroundings. With its blend of natural beauty and thoughtful design, Huntington Park promises an idyllic setting for capturing timeless portraits against the backdrop of Spokane's riverside charm.
Getting there: Huntington Park, 350 N Post St, Spokane, WA 99201, it can be easiest to park at River Park Square or the Parking Lot across the street from Washington Water Power and walk there.
Side notes: Dogs are allowed on leash. There are no public Restrooms. The closest restrooms will be near SkyRide, or at River Park Square.
4. Downtown Spokane: The heart of the city is an excellent choice for portraits with an urban vibe. The historic architecture and colorful murals of downtown Spokane offers plenty of character.
I love to walk around downtown and find unique spots I've never shot in before. I've walked with clients down random alleyways finding cool doorways, brick alcoves to pose within, and funky stairwells.
We've even found some abandoned buildings if you're looking for that stark contrast of beauty to rundown, or colorful graffiti art as a backdrop. Those spots are fun too, because they are unique and usually can't be recreated as many places eventually get torn down and new development built on top of it.
I typically stay between Riverfront park (W Spokane Falls Blvd) and Railroad Alley, but if you're down to walk we can always explore in further areas downtown.
Hot Tip: Wear comfortable shoes to walk in, you can change into different shoes when we take photos. I have a changing tube I can bring along if your package includes an outfit change, that way we don't have to plan our session around where the restrooms are!
5. Deep Creek Canyon: For those eager to immerse themselves in the untamed beauty of nature, Deep Creek Canyon beckons with its awe-inspiring vistas and rugged charm. This scenic enclave promises a captivating backdrop for your portrait session, offering a harmonious blend of picturesque landscapes and tranquil waters.
