One of the most common questions I hear from clients is:
“What kind of backdrops do you have?”
I recently created a Backdrop, Flooring & Set Styling Page so you can see a curated look at what I currently own. In addition to those featured backdrops, I also have a wide variety of paper backdrops, fabrics, curtains, and layered materials that aren’t all pictured online.
If you have something specific in mind, feel free to:
-
Share inspiration photos
-
Reference a past session I’ve photographed
-
Tell me the mood or aesthetic you’re drawn to
There’s a good chance I either already have something that works — or can design around your vision.
While many of my backdrops are sized with baby milestone sessions in mind (typically 5×7 or 6×8), others were intentionally ordered for maternity, family, newborn, pet, or seasonal sessions. The way I style and use them changes completely depending on the session type, the subject, and the story we’re telling.
This post is a behind-the-scenes look at how one backdrop can become many different sets — and why my approach to styling is intentionally flexible, creative, and never cookie-cutter.
Backdrops Are the Foundation — Not the Final Look
When clients browse my backdrop inventory, what they’re seeing is the starting point, not the finished design.

A backdrop on its own is just one element of a larger set. The final look of a session comes together through:
-
Flooring choices
-
Fabrics and curtains
-
Furniture and props
-
Color palettes and textures
-
How the set is layered, framed, and lit
This is why the same backdrop can feel:
-
Soft and minimal in one session
-
Whimsical or themed in another
-
Clean and bold in a pet or portrait session
The backdrop stays the same — the story changes.

How the Same Backdrop Works Across Session Types
Baby Milestone Sessions
Milestone sessions often use backdrops sized 5×7 or 6×8, which photograph beautifully for babies who are sitting, crawling, or standing.
For these sessions, I typically:
-
Add soft flooring or layered textures
-
Keep props minimal so baby stays the focus
-
Style sets based on age, stability, and safety
A single backdrop might be styled very differently for a 6-month sitter versus a 1-year-old who’s standing or walking.

Newborn & Family Sessions

For newborn and family sessions, I often:
-
Add curtains, rugs, or seating
-
Soften the lighting and styling
-
Create a more organic, connected feel
A backdrop that feels playful for a milestone session can become calm, neutral, and timeless for a newborn or family session simply by changing how it’s styled, lit, and framed.
Pet Sessions

Pet sessions are one of my favorite ways to show how versatile studio backdrops can be.
For cats and dogs, I often:
-
Use clean, solid, or textured backdrops
-
Keep sets simple and distraction-free
-
Let personality, movement, and expression lead
Bold colors, layered textures, and minimal styling can create striking portraits without overwhelming the subject.
Seasonal Mini Sessions

Seasonal minis are where backdrops really get to shine.
Holiday and themed sessions often involve:
-
More immersive styling
-
Coordinated props and layered textures
-
A cohesive color story
The same backdrop used year-round may be completely transformed with seasonal elements — whether it’s spring florals, Easter details, or a Christmas tree farm setup.

Simple vs. Creative: You Get to Choose
One of the things I value most in my studio is flexibility.
Some families love:
-
Clean, simple, timeless setups

Others want:
- Fully styled, imaginative, themed sets

I offer both — and everything in between.
No matter the session type, my goal is always the same:
to create a set that feels intentional, cohesive, and tailored to you.
When Custom Backdrops Make Sense

If you have a very specific vision or theme, custom backdrops are available for an additional fee.
Custom backdrop orders require:
-
Approximately 4 weeks for ordering and delivery
-
Additional planning time for styling and coordination
Because of this, I recommend booking sessions that require custom backdrops at least 6 weeks in advance. I’ll guide you through the selection process and help ensure the final set aligns beautifully with your session goals.
Why This Approach Matters
This flexible approach to styling means:
-
No two sessions look the same
-
Backdrops aren’t limiting — they’re adaptable
-
Your photos feel personal, not templated
Whether I’m photographing a baby, a family, a pet, or a seasonal session, the focus is always on telling your story, not forcing you into a preset look.
